As part of ART MONTH 2013,

TORTUGA STUDIOS is proud to present

Skein: Bound and Unravelled

March 22nd-31st 2013
</sup>

Featuring the work Garth Knight and Andrea Davies, two of Sydney’s most intriguing artists.

Tangled, knotted, woven, twisted, coiled and unpicked with nervous fingers, Skein examines the threads that hold our existence together while languidly choking the breath from within it.

From the incoherent tangle of everyday commitment and the sprung coils of the past, to the complexities of physical connection, Skein slips seductively from a thread of thought to charged bondage with an elegant shiver.

Installation artist and photographer Garth Knight is a master of elegant, bondage rope art. His work captures the exquisite beauty of the human form, bound within an arboreal limbo, limbs within limbs creating limbs.

Combining an interest in Zen concepts, pagan mythology and the traditions of kinbaku bondage with the botanical sculpture of penjing, the science of fractals and his training as an engineer, Knight creates images that explore the ‘big questions’: the cycles of life and death; the harmony of chaos and order; transcendence found in constraint.

Andrea Davies is an acclaimed artist and muralist. Her most recent work considers what lies beyond the façade of the things we take for granted, picking at frayed threads to tease out a story, from the stolen generation to the current immigration policy, through the pitted and desultory lens of the circus…

Is it the ignominious slide from the never-to-be-replaced vinyl legends of your youth to that rainbow-hued upstart the CD? Is it the imminent death of the analog TV signal, the gentle ticking of clock hands or the seductive expectation of film?

Mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, electric or cheese, analog is a hybrid beast. Distorted, clipped, ultimately authentic, analog is doomed to fail in the face of the uniform perfection of digital, yet it captures our imagination like nothing else.

Featuring the work of over 30 artists across all disciplines the Analog group show is a timely investigation into a shifting world, a world in which concepts, terms and ideas die in the face of development.

Rippling with bravado, Pictura Australiana channels the iconic brashness of the Young British Artist (YBA) scene of 90s London, with a distinctly Australian bent.

As part of ART MONTH 2012, sex, death, religion and much more are dissected through the murky prism of kitchen-sink realism, with a glint of backyard Australiana.

Featuring the work of 14 fresh emerging and established artists Pictura Australiana promised to be edgy, unembarrassed and proudly independent. A carnival ride into provocative sensationalism, decked in stripy sideshow awnings heavy with irony, the ringmaster ring-in is clutching a coldie and resting a leaking meat pie on his beer belly.

Peter Strong

The Pictura Australiana Show runs from 16th March until 30 March 2012
