As part of ART MONTH 2013,
TORTUGA STUDIOS is proud to present
Skein: Bound and Unravelled
March 22nd-31st 2013
Featuring the work Garth Knight and Andrea Davies, two of Sydney’s most intriguing artists.
Tangled, knotted, woven, twisted, coiled and unpicked with nervous fingers, Skein examines the threads that hold our existence together while languidly choking the breath from within it.
From the incoherent tangle of everyday commitment and the sprung coils of the past, to the complexities of physical connection, Skein slips seductively from a thread of thought to charged bondage with an elegant shiver.
Installation artist and photographer Garth Knight is a master of elegant, bondage rope art. His work captures the exquisite beauty of the human form, bound within an arboreal limbo, limbs within limbs creating limbs.
Combining an interest in Zen concepts, pagan mythology and the traditions of kinbaku bondage with the botanical sculpture of penjing, the science of fractals and his training as an engineer, Knight creates images that explore the ‘big questions’: the cycles of life and death; the harmony of chaos and order; transcendence found in constraint.
Andrea Davies is an acclaimed artist and muralist. Her most recent work considers what lies beyond the façade of the things we take for granted, picking at frayed threads to tease out a story, from the stolen generation to the current immigration policy, through the pitted and desultory lens of the circus…
