Tortuga has up to 45 artists in residence at any given time, up to 80 arts workers when in full production – with a local, national and international scope – and over 100 affiliated artists beyond this. We operate as a not-for-profit Incorporated Association, with the intention of providing affordable creative space and a strong sense of community for a sector that is widely under-recognised. Among our crew are setbuilders, props makers and special effects gurus for film, theatre and TV, AV experts, leatherworkers, jewellers, fine artists, installation artists, sculptors, writers, designers, photographers, multi-media artists, street artists and performers.
Tortuga has become known for its edgy group exhibitions, shows that shine a light on the rich underground arts scene in Sydney, and it is proud to include many seminal Sydney artists among its friends. The work of our artists has been included in exhibitions, shows, festivals and underground events internationally, nationally and on the local scene.
We are involved with ART MONTH, The Sydney Festival, Sydney Fringe Festival, EDGE and Art + About – among many – and we work professionally with Opera Australia, Sydney Living Museums, ABC, Ten, Seven, Nine, Netflix, Carriageworks, MCA, Art Gallery of NSW, White Rabbit Gallery, Will O’Rourke, JMC Academy, Pacific Magazines, the new Mad Max production, Glue Society, Sun Studios, SHFA, The Rocks, Revolver, Casula Powerhouse… the list is expansive and we’re proud of it.
