Tortuga Studios will open I Am My Home, a group exhibition exploring identity,
belonging, and the spaces we carry with us, on September 25th. The show features new work by Swerve, alongside Subtropical Goth, Mellitios Kyriakidis, and Suriya Black.
I Am My Home asks what it means to inhabit a sense of self rather than a physical
address — how memory, ritual, and material can turn any space, or no space at all,
into home. Across painting, mixed media, collage and DIY printmaking the four
artists bring distinct visual languages to a shared question: when everything else is
in flux, what stays constant?
“Home isn’t where I live. It’s everything I’m made of, everything I’ve picked up,
everything I’ve put down, it is as real as a building , as ephemeral as a memory
that’s what home is. It’s you.” -Swerve
Exhibiting artists:
Swerve — Northern Rivers-based artist exploring identity and belonging,
shaped by three decades in commercial design and his experience as an
adopted person. Has exhibited previously at Tortuga Studios, Elevator ARI,
Northern Rivers Community Callery and that burrito restaurant near the hub in
newtown amongst others.
Subtropical Goth — An artist of mystery and multimedia persuasion
Melitios Kyriakidis — Melletios’ work unfolds as a lived conceptual practice,
an immanent, immaterial art reality where performance, body, and
documentation blur. Life itself becomes medium and critique, recorded not to
preserve but to expose the irony and instability of constructed systems. The
work resists classification, operating beyond disciplines, within the everyday,
as subversive process rather than fixed form.
Suriya Black — Suriya Black is an artist, photographic Retoucher and
colourist in Sydney. She uses scale, composition and colour to draw on
themes of existentialism, the absurd and ephemeral memory.
